5 Steps to Reporting an Auto Insurance Claim

Having a car accident is scary, and it can be difficult to think straight when an incident has just occurred. After making certain that everyone involved is okay, chances are you will need to report the incident to your auto insurance company. Here are 5 things you can do to make certain your claim will be processed as quickly and as accurately as possible.

5 Steps to Reporting an Auto Insurance Claim:

1. Contact the Police: in many states it is a violation and you can be ticked for failure to report an auto accident. The police should provide the accident report number to you at the accident scene. Many insurance companies use the police report to verify contacts and vehicle information, so make certain to ask the officer at the scene for a copy of this number.

2. Contact Insurance Agent: contact your auto insurance agent or company and notify them of the auto accident.

3. Exchange Contact Information: you will want to exchange contact information with everyone involved in the incident. It will be important to have the names, phone numbers and emails of everyone involved in the incident and eye witnesses of the incident.

4. Collect Insurance Information: collect the insurance information of all involved parties. Many auto insurance companies will work directly with one another to help process claims quickly.

5. Take Photos, Video and/or Notes: if you can record the incident while you are at the scene of the accident (with a camera/video phone) this information could be highly useful. If you do not have a means of recording or taking photos, make certain to take notes of the incident, including location, vehicle license plate numbers and visible damages.
